Sandy van Solm, PhD Student

Sandy van Solm is a PHD student in the School of Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo. She has a Master's degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Public Safety from the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Before moving to Canada in 2009, she was a Platoon Chief for the Amsterdam Fire Department, and Senior Manager of Emergency Management for the region of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She is currently working for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority in the Emergency Management Programs Department.

Sandy is very interested in improving emergency response to the most vulnerable populations during emergencies and disasters. Her research program is focused on the use of health assessment information to strengthen emergency and disaster management capacity for vulnerable persons.

Sandy is co-author of a book, as well as a chapter on diversity in the fire department, and several published reports on youth and crime.
