Ron Hoffman, PhD

Dr. Hoffman is assistant professor, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Nipissing University and is an Associate Fellow of interRAI serving on the international Network for Excellence in Mental Health (iNEMH) committee. Prior to his appointment at Nipissing University he was subject coordinator of mental health training at the Ontario Police College, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, a centralized police training facility in the province of Ontario, Canada. Dr. Hoffman has been designated an expert witness on police training as it pertains to responding to persons with serious mental health disorders including use of force and de-escalation techniques. Dr. Hoffman was co-developer of the interRAI Brief Mental Health Screener (BMHS), an instrument designed to standardize police officer observations of persons suspected of having mental health disorders. His current research interests include identifying the characteristics of persons who have frequent contact with police officers, and the criminal justice system including persons with mental health disorders, intellectual disabilities and cognitive impairment.
